What's in the Bowl?: Podfic, drabbles, pigeon/cat/dog TikTok recs, fic prompts, nonfiction audiobook recs

Let Me Know: Pods and drabbles are for Harry Potter fandom

Other info: Fic: tell me your top 3 fav HP ships and I will write you a drabble. If you don’t like romance then drop me your fav 3 characters and (if they are obscure) a line or two about what you like about them (Book canon, not iPhone game or Cursed Child, sorry)
Podfic: drop me 3+ links to HP fics that are less than 1k and if I’m inspired I will gift to you on ao3. Let me know your ao3 name! I only record works with a blanket permission to podfic statement on the ao3 profile. If it’s your fic, please add a statement <3
TikTok recs: I will send anonymised links so please feel safe in receiving those funny pigeon vids
Prompts: I will give you a few options for a drabble challenge. I love coming up with drabble prompts.

It was not, after all, so easy to die. Every second he breathed, the smell of the grass, the cool air on his face, was so precious: to think that people had years and years, time to waste, so much time it dragged, and he was clinging to each second. At the same time he thought that he would not be able to go on, and knew that he must. The long game was ended, the Snitch had been caught, it was time to leave the air …

Today is the day I
say goodbye to my beloved little Elsa. Yesterday the vet called to see how she was, and suggested we put her to sleep sooner rather than later. He said 'today is fully booked unfortunately' and I couldn't carry on the conversation. Their computer systems crashed and I couldn't speak to him when he called back with appointment times. I knew she didn't have ages left, but only 4 days ago she was climbing 6 foot fences. I thought we had weeks or even months.

It's happening today at 4:15. To think that people had years and years, time to waste, so much time it dragged... I regret being in my booth so much these past few weeks and not spending time with my precious little girl.

I thought it would be clearer when her time was up. She is eating. She is enjoying chicken, mayonnaise, cream, Dreamies. (Normally she isn't allowed these things due to her prescription diet but that's out the window now.) She's not incontinent, she is still going to the loo. She's purring, looking me in the eye. Still grooming herself (a bit). But... I slept on the sofa (Every second [...] was so precious), and not once did she jump up, sit on my chest, and prod my face (her fav 3am/5am activity, when circumstances permitted). At least 4 times last night she went to eat her litter/lick it (classic anaemia), she was drinking vast amounts of water. A few days ago, a bird was sitting on her food bowl, a few inches from her head! unthinkable that she would let this go unchallenged. She loved making unhinged noises at birds, near or far. So at least some of her dignity has gone.

Each minute that passes feels terrible. I am trying to cry quietly so I don't upset her, and respect that she may want to be alone.

I can't imagine any comparable situation... if a relative was going to Dignitas, they would still be awake/alert to talk about it. If life support was being turned off at a certain time/day, the loved one would be asleep/unconscious. But my Elsa is still here, still regally reclining, hoping my next meal will have surplus mayonnaise.

This year, I was put into Team Purple Puffapods, a team where all of us liked HP, which was fab. I love the HP positive energy. It can get me down when people aren’t encouraging of my projects, which are invariably HP.

For the 3 rounds we came joint first, and I think we were the only team do to all 3 dares (which is a bit like playing on hard mode?) we then came 3rd in the tiebreaker. For the tiebreaker, we tried to podfic all 100 double drabbles from the HP Saffics Summer Swap and this was great fun to all come together.

I’m reiterating the following for my own records as my memory is so bad. I also wanted to DM some past teammates for help and this list woulda helped me a lot!:

  •  VT20 was the first game and it passed me by. I heard about it on Discord but didn’t really understand what it was. I was still finding my feet, writing 40k for Snarry a Thon in March/April, and not in the right headspace to work on a team
  •  My first game was MB20. I was on Team Phone with AvidBkWrm, d4td, eafay, justaphage, Mist and rhythmia. Which was confusing because there was another Team Phone in a different year. This is why I totally forgot I was on Team Phone. I didn’t push myself or involve myself in projects. I was a bit overwhelmed, and didn’t really understand multifandom spaces/events (I don’t wanna get points for podding a fandom I’m not in! I want Snape-related points!), had no idea how to do a multivoice, what a filk was, and didn’t understand a lot of in-jokes/references to past games, and felt everyone knew each other. I’m glad I easedinto Voiceteam though because each time I come out my shell a bit more. I made loads of memes and posted 1 podfic. Ouch!
  • My 2nd was VT21 Once Upon a Lime with Akaihyou, Garbage, AvidBkWrm, Eafay, Rindle, Penndragon, Mist, Nrandom, cookiemom. This was the game with Superchallenge. I had a lot more fun. I posted 11 podfics. Some were long.
  • MB21 I was on Team Rock with pea, eafay, sisi, Lunatique, Cass Caelis ,Rindle, jellyfishgalaxies. I posted 10 podfics
  • VT22 I was with the Dandy Lions – Ravin, GD, pea, Blue, Parry, twtd, sophinisba, aethel, Rhi. 8 podfics! SWAK was 5 hrs, others were 2 hours. So much fun
  • MB22 I was on Cosmos with GD, kbirb, Kitt, perry and Vex. 11 podfics!
  • VT23 sadly forgot to sign up and couldn’t join late I posted a 2 hour podfic in May 2023. I think I was also working on audiobooks during this time
  •  MB23 Team Cookies with sisi, Ket, boppinrobin, CrimsonMoonn, pea, NotBatman, Yuurei, Chantress, Lena, Aether, DOA, and Garbage. 4 podfics. I’m including Fallen Marigolds, a vid that took me ages, and a nearly 7 hr pod.
  • VT24 Team Purple Puffapods with petrodobreva, sweatersinthesummer, peasina, pinklotus9, Rindle, Cailynwrites, thedramionearchives, my_lost_and_found, SerenaEW, Nymphie_Wolf, and Kittona. 32 pods this time, 25 were double drabbles. I also made significant progress on some WIPs thanks again to Rindle.

I was back with Rindle (Lime and Rock), pea (Rock, Dandy Lion and Cookies), and Kitt (Cosmos!)

I thought it was cool that the mods put me back with people I’d been on a team with before, but when listing the games I’ve played so far, I think it would be an achievement for the mods to put us on teams with all new people!

My significant projects or progress includes…:

  • The trailer for For Auld Lang Syne. Can’t believe I tried vidding. I was glad to cross ‘make a trailer’ off my list!
  • Several hours of progress for Crammer School. Thank u Rindle for your help
  •  I started love is touching souls AND Rapture
  • I wrote most of In Blood and Bloom, we went from 0 to a 5k podfic in 3 days I think? A Hogwarts era soulmate Drarry
  •  I translated a medieval AU Snarry into English. I must get round to posting this

For Chip In, I asked 5 authors of fics I admire for a podfic blanket permission statement, which is a bit out of my comfort zone, and 3 said yes! (oh shit) soooo I have updated my Potential Pod list with…:
  • Cayce_Morris’s Coffeehouse Jazz
  • Helenish’s A Soft Spot for Lots Causes
  • Suitesamba’s With Eyes Wide Open

Hi guys.

Since my SnowflakeChallenge post, I've...:
  • Finished and posted by Choose Your Own Adventure. It was great to tick it off the list!
  • Put the podfic on hold as I've decided to save it for summer. It's Drarry, inexplicit, and not dark, so is a great contender for Voiceteam
  • Spent about 40 hours on the podfic cover (a probable underestimation)
  • Started a new hobby! Which is digital art.
  • Read 60% of all AO3 HP author profiles
I've always been crap at art. No matter how hard I tried, I'd get a C, and everything I did was a frustrating process and looked dreadful. I bought a £20 graphics tablet/pen thing off Ebay to give typography a try, thinking I could do some cool handdrawn fonts for my podfic covers, because lately I've been getting into handwriting/cursive practise and I'm not too bad at it. Previously, I'd scanned stuff in, but my scanner is terrible.

A lot of the things that sucked about art  are negated by the magic pen, because instead of using a rubber and still being able to see the faint crappy line, you can permanently erase things! not to mention, if you've drawn the cat's legs too long, you can squish them down.

It's more sociable as well because my cat can chill on my lap whilst I use the pen on the arm of the sofa.

The tent took me about 5 hours, and I somehow deleted it, so that's 10 hours of my life I won't get back. I literally only just had the idea that this could be a 'welcome to a summer fete' type of sign.

This is where I started, listening to audiobooks before going to bed, and deciding who to gift it to if I make it:

where I ended up a week later:

And this is where I am at, today. I had the distressing realisation last night that covers must be square. So everything's a lot more squished than planned.

I don't like the cassette where it is, but I spent too long on it to delete it. I appreciate that you should plan your ideas before polishing the different components - no different to making sure your fic makes sense before spending ages on little sections - but sometimes my sketch looks so shit I assume the idea won't work. Perhaps once you know your own skills, this becomes less of an issue.

I've also been busy reviewing all Harry Potter AO3 authors to look for podfic permission statements. Last January, I (somehow) followed some instructions online to use a script to get all AO3 authors with at least 1 public HP work. I tried to repeat it, for all new HP authors, but I have zero clue how I got the script to work last time. I don't know WHAT I was thinking, not writing down every step!

On the flip side, thousands of people have archive-locked their works as a response to AI scraping. So my old list is probably decent. There are 57,168 authors not already on fpslist.org, and about 1 in every 25 links are dead. I wonder what portion of these dead links are people changing their pseud as often as their contact lenses.

My preliminary results:
  • 103 blanket permission statements! Excellent!
  • Sadly that is 0.3%.. ouch. Every little helps
  • 34083 profiles checked!
  • which is 60% of my list! This felt like an Everest task, but is more manageable than I thought
  • 1 person advertising for a flatmate about a decade ago, giving away far too many identifying details
  • Several people who have had their profiles edited postmortem :(
  • Thankfully a tiny number of "never podfic my stuff and leave me alone" statements
  • A few dozen very unusual pronouns listed, the most memorable of which is 'wormself'
  • A distressing few hundred people selling merch, and just straight up asking for money. I wonder if they get much from doing this?
  • Many "What's the point, nobody reads"
  • Several translators who say they take suggestions but leave no contact details
  • 1 person who judges those who put pineapple on pizza. This is despite a YouGov poll stating that more than half of pizza loving Brits like pineapple on pizza. Funnily enough I was discussing this last night with my husband, because they removed this topping from Pizza Express, 2 weeks after he discovered it, and went back to order the same pizza again. A dreadful experience.

So... questions for you.
  1. Look at the 'S' in 'Delinquents'. Did you draw this 'special S' in primary school all over your schoolbooks? My husband doesn't recognise it! !! and roughly how long ago was this, and in what country?
  2. Have you started any new hobbies or upgraded any skills lately?

I’m working on a bunch of things, some not very actively…!

  • I’m translating Glass Heart. I’ve done a LOT, but this is a huge fic. English has about a third more words per sentence than Russian so a 60k is in actual fact a 90k. I half regret posting it as a WIP, but it is motivating me to continue.
  • I have just started a repod of Hermione’s Hogwarts Crammer. Like Can’t Take the Sky, I am enjoying every minute, but unlike Can’t Take the Sky, I am laughing every couple of minutes. I’m trying to go with a mix of book!canon and film!canon accents. It’s very, very weird for me to be doing Evanna’s voice for Luna. SO WEIRD. If you don’t know why and want to, DM me. If you are Irish and like Drarry podfics, please please proof listen this for me
  • Faelyee and I are plotting a school era Snarry and I want to get back to this. It’s gonna be amazing
  • Then there’s my time travel Snarry trilogy, some parts of it are completely plotted. I know when I properly start writing this, I’ll want to focus on this and only this (so why did I start that podfic??) because I have subscribers for Glass Heart, and I should really do one project at a time. I still have a lot of research to do on 1977 vs 1999 slang.
  • I just checked my planning document for my Choose Your Own Adventure, Draco’s Splendid Decisions, and shockingly I have actually written all of it in 2021, 50k, haven’t touched it since, and half of it is proof read. Shocker! *Head desk*

Here is the summary! I'm proud of it!:

Stuck in the doldrums of a rubbish summer holiday, you are invited to return to Hogwarts for eighth year. Should you go, and endure another round of academia? Dive into the mundane world of work? Or escape it all with an international getaway?

You’re a free man. The ending depends on you.

Follow this multiple choice Choose Your Own Adventure game to see where life leads you.

In 2023, I posted 13 podfics, totalling 13 hours. Not a lot, really (for me).

This does not include Endgame, which was 90% recorded in 2023 but technically finished in 2024, and a lot of Can’t Take the Sky was done in the final days of 2023, but will have to go into my 2024 roundup.

A couple that stand out to me are:

  • Routines by Phantomato, the only pairing that’s not Snarry that I would say I adore, which is Tom RiddlexEdmund Pevensie. I think I did a good job of Tom, who is hard to act. When he’s Voldemort in a podfic I make him sound like a shrill Ralph Fiennes, nicht gut.
  • On the Deficiencies of Translation Spells by LilaDiurne. I’d been putting it off for years, removing and adding it back onto my to-pod list, because I wasn’t sure I could do a good job of speaking French, speaking English in a French accent whilst also acting, and all the music, and the film references. I sat down and just DID IT, and yes it was hard, but I did a good job. I’m glad I waited because I’m better at this now, and I think it’s a much better pod. Like when you use a slow cooker.

Miscellaneous 2022/3 stats

  • In my 2021 roundup, I said I was thrilled at the end of 2020 to have 1k kudos on a fic, and then to find 1500 kudos at the end of 2021. And now I am kinda shocked to see 2402 kudos on it, as of 15Jan24. Who are these people?? I love you. Thank you for reading my stuff.
  • At the end of 2020, I had 366 kudos in a fortnight, and now it’s got 1624. I’m blown away as I didn’t think people would get into my epistolary format. It’s very rewarding to see people are enjoying it as it was such hard work rewriting DH. Occasionally I still get comments ”Why didn’t Hedwig die?” uhh the same reason Snape did not die, the entire plot is different, it is a rewrite. Makes me laugh!
  • 7 people in the past 2 years have kudos’d Of Love Notes and Bottle Caps! YAAAS.
  • I no longer use Audacity to record, after some horrific errors, and OneDrive syncing nightmares, and now use Reaper. I am now much calmer.
  • Cadbury Caramel multipacks have shrunk! The bars are much shorter! Wtf people! Someone needs to fix the economy.
  • I finished listening to The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. I am slowly, like a snail, making my way through book 3.
  • I was devastated to lose a dear friend at the end of 2021, and stunned when she recently removed co-authorship from our fic. AO3 threatened to remove me when I added her name into the author’s note. I don’t want to take all credit for it - I only wrote 40-60% of it. Although I get all kudos and comments emails, this one from AO3 ”Abuse” team went to my junk folder. Just so awful.
  • In 2022, I lost another two friends. One is on, I HOPE a fandom break, I am pretty sure she isn’t dead, missing her loads. I miss her encouragement, art, and our chats. I want to finish my translation so when she’s back, she’ll have another great TreggiDi fic to read. I just lost another friend, when Scarlet passed away on Boxing Day. Horrific!

I’m trying to be grateful for what I have. Faelyee is an excellent friend, and is my AO3 next-of-kin for JocundaSykes and JocundaSykesEncore. I have had lots of fun lately with Serena and Pea. My laptop works. I have a recording booth. I still have half of this minuscule Caramel bar left.

Next year (or… this year) I would like to:

  • Reach out to Rindle, an all-round fabulous human being, and return to helping with fpslist.org!
  • Finish and post the Choose Your Own Adventure! It’s so nearly finished it’s just RIDICULOUS that I haven’t finished and posted it!
  • Finish plotting with Faelyee. *Rubs hands together in glee*
  • Finish listening to The Return of the King
  • Edit LotR to rebalance the audio. It’s this version, which sometimes has music so loud I have no idea what’s happening any more. Despite that, I still highly recommend it
jocundasykes: (Default)
Towards the end of 2021, I received some bad news, and it’s taken me a long time to pick myself up and come back to fandom properly. I skipped a 2022 review post, so I’ll write two posts for each year.

No pie chart, sadly, as I haven’t been tracking word counts, but I can tell you that my writing was 100% Snarry.

I posted the Somnambulist, a charming 15k Snarry, which I translated. I adapted Light’s So Quite New a Thing into a memefic, which is harder than it looks. Does this count as "writing"? Well, it's certainly not a podfic. I also posted 15k (and have a few more thousand up my sleeve) of Glass Heart, a lovely and dark slavery AU.

I posted 20 podfics, totalling 28 hours. My goal was to ”record 20 podfic hours”, whoops.

I am particularly proud of:

Lush Life and Home Again, Home Again, both by pir8fancier, because they were long multivoices, which is a ridiculous amount of work, and it completes the series. I’d podficced the first story in the trilogy near the beginning of my podfic journey and never considered carrying on with the series. I’m a completionist!

The Politician’s Wife. ALSO by pir8fancier. I’m picking this one because I think I did a really good job of Hermione, and the cover is my favourite to date.

Not counted in my total, obviously, but I also released two audiobooks in 2022 which were 6.5hr and 9.5hrs long. So I haven’t really dropped in terms of audio productivity. It was nerve wracking putting myself out there to be reviewed not only by the public, but by the paying public, customers! Was everyone on AO3 just being nice??? I had nothing to be worried about as audiobook reviewers are very kind. I was shortlisted for an award for one of them, and they have absolutely pushed me into learning new accents. I am certain these new skills will improve my future pods!

I find my rating pie chart amusing:

A review of my 2022 goals

- I have signed up for another 200k Get Your Words Out challenge I was too blindsided to do this, and to be honest I completely forgot that I signed up and must’ve missed every check in

- Translate at least 1 story. Thanks to Bailou I have a shortlist, in order of preference I posted one translation in 2022, I’m so glad Bailou got to read it before she left fandom

- Spend most of my year working on my time travel Snarry Sadly not. I had 0 mojo for this but have been making little notes on my phone for years now.

- Write at least 1 podfic guide YES! I did this. It has 43 kudos!

- Record 20 podfic hours (much less than this year) LOLno

- Sign up for ZERO fests. Except perhaps Voiceteam and Voiceteam Mystery Box. How else is this time travel ever gonna get done?? I have continued to not sign up to fests. Sadly I did not get to do one Voiceteam because I forgot about signups, but I have done all the other Voiceteams. 0 regrets because I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them, made new friends, and learnt new skills/got out of a rut.

- I am only going to podfic authors with blanket permission statements going forwards An interesting goal! In 2022, I did this! Except for perhaps rexluscus? In 2023, I podficced 1 by dracofiend who is super podfic friendly but doesn’t have a statement, and Phantomato, who doesn’t have BP, but TomxEdmund is like a barge-sized ship, so I don’t have the luxury of excluding non-BP authors. No regrets cos it’s a fantastic listen.

I did not make any goals for 2023, which you can probably gather from the fact I wrote this blog post a whole year too late.

jocundasykes: (Default)

In early January, I participated in Voiceteam Mystery Box in Team Cookies. We came 3rd! I shared a team with PolynomialPandemic, Aether, Chantress, Notbatman, Yuurei, horchata, peasina, sisi_rambles, aliteralgarbageheap, CrimsonMoonn, and LenaLawlipop.

For the Finish Line challenge, I finished my podfic Endgame, and compiled the mp3s into an audiobook file for mp3. For about a year I had most chapters embedded as a stream into the fic ao3 post itself. I’m so glad to have finished it up! My stumbling block was an awful ”Error Your computer disk is unwriteable”, where I couldn’t copy and paste the audio or save. I had a bunch of files with ”USE” ”USE THIS IS THE ONE” and I was too scared to delete anything in case my files corrupted. UGH

I slightly reduced my to-pod list by doing:

  • Love’s Curse, written by Dracofiend. This is almost a sister fic to my pod Sine Qua Non, but reversed, and remaining in Harry’s POV. I recall discovering it by accident on Livejournal and being SO HAPPY! thankfully Dracofiend has since crossposted it to AO3. I hope more people will now discover it.
  • Speaking of underrated, I also podficced Can’t Take the Sky by Cluegirl. Weirdly it has 297 Kudos. WHY? I discovered it via an ancient rec list, several years ago. Since then I have seen a bunch of people rec it via Reddit, so it’s on people’s radars. WHY SO FEW KUDOS, PEOPLE. Cluegirl also has blanket permission! yay! I podficced this for the Present challenge. Occasionally on my to-pod list, I write potential giftee names. For instance, if I know they’d love it. In this column, for some reason, I wrote ”Gift for Paraka?” For those of you who don’t know Paraka, she has been around a long time in the podfic corner of fanspace, and she offers (or offered) podfic hosting via her website, so if you listen to a variety of podficcers you must have seen a lot of URLs containing her username. I must have stumbled across her requesting a Cluegirl Snarry pod, or THIS fic, in a gift exchange website, or potentially on a LJ comm like HP Podfic Fest, at a time when I was scouring it for authors who had forgotten to add their name to fplslist.org. Anyway this fic is dark, (yet GREAT! everyone should listen!) and I found out near the end that dear Scarlet1989 aka emeraldlove died, so.... probably a good pod to do after the shitty news. She was super supportive of my pods.
  • 18 months ago I asked for permission to podvid Fallen Marigolds. Luendland kindly assented and then I felt bad for 18 months. I had no idea where to start. Thankfully, Voiceteam had a challenge, The One That Got Away, where you could do a challenge from previous years that you didn’t do at the time. So I did PODVID, for a juicy 75 points, and, using Powerpoint(??), somehow managed to cobble it together. Honestly I'm still kinda shocked that it worked. Unfortunately the artwork is done in such a way that I couldn’t easily crop it, to fit the proportions of a landscape video, so I had to do some panning down, which was, errrr, interesting. That’s why I couldn’t use video editing software since they all wanted to zoom in and pan at the same time, instead of being zoomed in, and panning. Nightmare. I had to get the exact milliseconds from the audio track, and display the slide for the exact amount of time, and get the panning to that same amount too. I’ll say it again. NIGHTMARE! I’m really proud I did it, though. The comic is super. And the artwork for this one is splendid.

Those were all my HP fanworks. Not bad for 5 days of challenges!

I did a couple of other projects:

  • I'm proud of this one... within the space of 30 mins I read lyrics, heard a youtube video, and somehow produced a filk! Definitely a record for me. Written by my teammate Aether, she would get points for writing the words, so I managed to squeeze this in before the deadline. Tamlin is a Feyre/Tamlin filk.
  • Not a fanwork, but I directed Pea, who read the beginning of my fic In the Web. It was loads of fun, a highlight for me. I think I'm going to add more interiority to this fic. I like it, but it's lacking something
  • I was an outraged voice in Gummy Cooks Ramen. The editing in this is masterful
  • Somehow I ended up as Jason from the Good Place, of which his Floridian accent was an interesting test.
  • I read some poetry in the delightful Podfic: 'L'après-midi de Chapman' by houndsoflove podded by peasina.
  • And lastly, I was Tom Barnaby in A Matter of Fête, a Midsomer Murders fanwork.

Somehow I didn't end up making 50 memes as usual. It was a great way to spend a week off from work, a much-needed break.

These will likely undergo more adjustments, but I'm largely happy with the summaries for my time travel trilogy.

Without further ado, and yes I have been working on this for like.... 2 .. 3? years,

Wow I just looked it up, I wrote 7.5k of notes for this fic by July 2020. At that point, the fic was called Beneath the Wings. This is a line from the song I'm obsessed with, the entire song vividly calls to my mind's eye a Slytherin common room party in the 70s. I just love the tune. Daydream Believer by the Monkees. At that stage, I'd pencilled in the tags "Harry Potter Is So Done, Time Travel Fix It". lmao

By May 2021, I had 27k of notes, and this dodgy summary:

Severus is determined to get through seventh year, gain excellent NEWTs and get Marked by next summer. But there’s a new boy that’s just been sorted into Slytherin, set on sending Severus’s plans awry.

"Tags: Harry Potter Is So Done, Time Travel Fix It, Angst With a Happy Ending"

And now, here we are. 197k of notes, plus 30k of In the Web.

In the Web Snape POV

For his last year of school, Severus Snape wants nothing more than to ace his exams and join the Death Eaters. But when the new boy, Henry Pevensie, kisses him, Severus mustn't lose sight of his prize.

After all—this is all he's ever dreamed of.

The further Severus is seduced into the web of the Dark Lord, the more discordant he is with Pevensie and his secrets. As the Marking date draws nearer, Severus must choose between his dreams and the ugly reality before him.

Characters:
Snape, Harry, Avery, Mulciber, Wilkes, Lily, James, Sirius, Remus, Regulus, Voldemort, Dumbledore, Eileen Snape, Tobias Snape, Severus Snape's Grandmother, Lucius, Rodolphus

Tags:
Alternate Universe: Time Travel, Romance, Drama, Explicit Sexual Content, Death Eaters, No Character Bashing, Marauders Era, First War with Voldemort

In the Dark - probable switching POV

Living with Severus Snape in a Voldemort-free world was supposed to be Harry's happy ending. But their hard-won peace unravels when Dumbledore enlists them to traverse the globe to confront an emerging darkness.

Ancient rituals, and the birth of a new evil sweeps Harry and Severus into escalating danger. They must push their powerful bond to the limits.

in the Deep

As an Auror, Harry Potter is duty-bound to investigate what his own department will not. With Dementors infesting Scotland and the closure of the Ministry, Harry and Severus must call on the Order of the Phoenix for one last stand against the encroaching darkness.

I would appreciate any feedback on the summaries!

Whether you're a meticulous plotter or a discovery writer, it's wise to consider the skills, tools, and settings that your protagonist and his sidekicks will require for the end of the story. Equally important is understanding the role of the antagonists/contagonists/antagonistic force, and when their plans should be introduced.

Since we've all read it, let's delve into the world of Harry Potter to illustrate these concepts. I'm doing a re-read right now, and am partway through CoS. I found that the majority of what Harry, Ron and Hermione need for a book's climax is foreshadowed within the same book. It is unlikely that Rowling "forgot" about these elements in earlier books; rather, she strategically incorporated foreshadowing and breadcrumbs to satisfy the casual reader's desire for a cohesive story arc. This approach allows readers to make connections, anticipate developments, and feel rewarded when their observations and predictions align with the narrative. Or, if you're a bit slow like me, to feel rewarded upon subsequent re-read. Whilst there are a few exceptions such as the diadem hiding place in book 6, Slytherin's locket in book 5, the rest are little Easter eggs such as the vanishing cabinet and Draco's murderous necklace cropping up in book 2.

Introduction Conclusion
The Ministry always wants Dumbledore’s advice - CH5 The Ministry calls Dumbledore away - CH16
HP visits Gringotts in CH5, we learn of break-in in CH6 In CH8, HP learns it was the same day he was in London
Nicolas Flamel is revealed on Choc Frog card - CH6 Neville gives HP the same card - CH13
Ron says Bertie Bott’s beans can be grim - CH6 Dumbledore eats an earwax bean - CH17
Ron tells HP that Charlie studies dragons in CH6, in CH8 Hagrid and Ron discuss this again in case we forgot. CH14 we get rid of Norbert via Charlie
Fred and George offer to post Ginny a toilet seat - CH6 Fred and George gift HP a toilet seat - CH17
Slytherin have won the House Cup 6 years running - CH7 Gryffindor win the Cup - CH17
Quirrell is at the Leaky Cauldron in CH5, and HP’s scar burns when Snape ‘looked past Quirrell’s turban straight into HP’s eyes’ in CH7. Snape threatens Quirrell in CH13 Snape is revealed as the contagonist, and Quirrellmort the antagonist - CH17
‘the third-floor corridor on the right-hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a very painful death’ - CH7 They visit the corridor LOL - CH9
The Forbidden Forest is out of bounds and contains dangerous creatures - CH7 Detention in the Forest - CH15
HP aces his flying lesson - CH9 HP needs to catch the flying key - CH16
Hermione tries to convince Ron and HP not to wander the school - CH9 Neville says the same to them - CH16
We meet a mountain troll - CH10 Quirrell knocked one out - CH16
Wizard’s chess - CH12 Wizard’s chess - CH16
HP gets an Invisibility Cloak - CH12 The trio need it - CH16
HP gets a flute - CH12 The trio need it - CH16
HP finds the Mirror of Erised - CH12 It’s Dumbledore’s Stone trial - CH17

So, whether you choose to meticulously plan your story or embrace the journey of discovery, it is worth considering how elements such as character skills, tools, and settings can be introduced and developed within the same book or fic. Thoughtful foreshadowing and well-placed hints can enhance the reader's engagement and contribute to a fulfilling storytelling experience. And it's super fun to do!

I often read in fics an abundance of academic and professional titles and would love to straighten this out. I can’t find an existing HP article about this, but did enjoy this brief LiveJournal post.

First, let’s discuss honorifics in the real world.

  • Formal titles include sir, gentleman, ma’am (rhymes with jam if you are addressing Her Late Majesty TQ), madam (NOT madame unless French), dame, lord, lady.
  • Academic titles include mister, doctor and professor. Mister/Miss/Ms - surgeons. Doctor - holder of a degree such as PhD, MBBS, DPhil. Professor - very hard to get this title. One can have ‘doctor’ or ‘professor’ on UK passports. It’s gonna be the first thing I do on completion of my PhD. In contrast to America, Australia, etc., there are very few professors in hospitals/universities. It is a much bigger deal to be a professor in the kingdom.
  • Finally, the Armed Forces and the police have rank-related honorifics, such as PC Plod/Police Constable Plod.

Now let’s look at canon.

  • Healer is used in place of Doctor. ‘You – er – haven’t seen Healer Smethwyck, have you?’
  • There is no instance of Minister Fudge, Minister Scrimgeour, Minister Shacklebolt or Minister Thicknesse. ‘President Obama’ is a phrase but ‘Prime Minister Sunak’ is not. Therefore Minister Shacklebolt is probably an Americanism.
  • Similarly there is no instance of Auror Moody, or Auror Anybody
  • There is no instance of Headmaster Dumbledore, Headmaster Snape or Headmaster Anybody. It’s ‘The Headmaster’ or ‘Professor Dumbledore’ or ‘Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress’
  • Unspeakable is a job title, not a rank. There is no ‘Unspeakable Surname’
  • Master has been addressed in a previous post. Master is a formal way of addressing little boys.
  • There is no Heir Surmame
  • No Obliviator Surname either, which isn’t a surprise as we’ve got no named Obliviators

In conclusion, Healer is the only non-standard canonical honorific. Thank you for coming.

I've been working on the background details of this fic for a long time. I am probably using every blog post: https://jocundasykes.dreamwidth.org/tag/canon+information to inform my writing. I decided to finish off a chapter rather than plough on ahead and won't be posting it to AO3 until I'm done with the fic. There'll be 10 chapters in the first half of act 1. The outline is 27k! f me!

I've got two versions of the summary..... struggling with making them sound actually interesting! would be SUPER interested if anyone here has any thoughts on the summaries, or on the fic itself. Where they think it's going, if any of this is boring, if any of this fits (or doesn't fit) with their imagination of Severus's home.

Thanks me luvvers.

For his last year of school, Severus Snape wants nothing more than to ace his exams and join the Death Eaters. But when the new boy, Henry Pevensie, kisses him, Severus mustn't turn his eyes from the goal.

After all—this is all he's ever dreamed of.

or

Severus Snape is determined to make the most of seventh year, gain excellent NEWTs and join the ranks of the Death Eaters by next summer.

But a secret love affair with Pevensie, the new boy sorted into Slytherin, sends Severus’s plans awry.

As Severus is seduced deeper into the web of the Dark Lord, he is increasingly at odds with Pevensie and his secrets. As the Marking date draws nearer, Severus must choose between his dreams and the ugly reality before him.

* sorry this is not under the cut, I'm no good at doing that *

People don't give much credence that a powerful political organisation would want to recruit a seventeen-year-old. But the Dark Lord recognised certain special qualities in the young, and did not discriminate—when it came to age. The start of Severus Snape’s recruitment began one day, late in the summer holidays, when the days dragged their heavy heels after dies caniculares.

Three days remained when that letter arrived with a crash, rudely interrupting Dad's hangover as he slept on the sofa.

"Oi!" Dad bellowed.

Severus leapt up from his target practise and stuffed his wand under the mattress. Dead bluebottles littered both the windowsill and the outline of his Charms essay on 'The Use and Misuse of Standing Stones'. Through the wall, Baby Next Door wailed, joining in with Dad's chorale.

Unable to delay the inevitable, Severus marched downstairs, wearing a scowl and his nightshirt.

Dad was lunging for an empty wine bottle, which Severus knew he'd wield like a Beater's club at the gigantic eagle owl perched on the kitchen table.

"It's just an owl," Severus pointed out, scooping her up and stepping out into the garden. Rigby ruffled her feathers and glared reproachfully at Severus.

Mum was hunched over a fag at the end of their postage-stamp garden, her back to the house. She didn't intervene.

"Get it OUT OF HERE!" Dad roared.

His shift stoking the boilers down the carpet mill didn't start till eight. Ever since he lost his job at the butchers, Dad had made mornings hell.

Severus snatched the scroll from Rigby's leg and threw her up and out into the foggy morning sky. She spread her huge wings and, as fast as a crossbow, shot out of the neighbourhood without a backward glance.

Severus read:

Dear S,

I write to convey the sad news of the passing of Roger Shaddick. The funeral is at eight, and you may find it fortuitous to attend. Apologies for the malapropos hour and forgive my hand; I shall ask Rigby to fly like the wind. It's at the same place we met before.

With kindest regards,

L

Severus traced the black 'M' wax seal and ducked back into the kitchen.

This must be it; his opportunity for a first Sponsor.

Dad flung his bottle into the bin with such force, the glass shattered, and Severus jumped.

"What do they want?" Dad said.

Roger Shaddick: the name was unfamiliar. According to the clock atop the mantelpiece, he had three minutes.

He looked into Dad's bloodshot eyes and said, "I'm going out."

"No, you're not!" He yelled. Severus took the stairs two at a time. "What right do you have to go off on a jolly, when you don't lift a FINGER in this house! You'll stay home and help your mother!"

Severus's face twisted, and he scrambled out of his nightshirt, hunting in his trunk for his plain black school robes.

Dad must've recruited Mum to the cause, for she screamed up the stairs, "Treat your father with respect! Show him some common courtesy!"

The neighbour's baby wailed louder than ever.

Severus snatched his wand from under the bed, locking his bedroom door wordlessly, and repaired his scuffed shoes with an extra sticking charm.

Dad's footsteps thundered up the staircase. "Get the hell out of here, then! I don't want to see your—"

Severus Disapparated.

His feet met hard ground as he landed at the crossroads at Blusty Lodge. Trees bent double from the gales and his robes whipped out behind him as he turned, seeking the entryway amongst the wild moorland. Early dots of pink heather waved in the wind beside the hedgerows; one path snaked up to disappear into the shoulder of a hill, and another, perpendicular, disappeared between two young oaks.

Further along the oak-lined path, the trees gave way to chestnut coppice, amongst which he found the post he'd been looking for and rapped it with his wand. A low archway shimmered into sight. Severus ducked through it and hurried up a twisting path, this time lined with twisted, ancient beeches, to a set of tall wrought-iron gates. A goateed man swathed in silver furs was deep in conversation with Narcissa Black, her black lace veil stirring in the breeze.

"Severus!" she cried, as he hurried up to the gates. "So pleased you could attend." Narcissa air-kissed him on the cheek.

"My condolences," Severus said.

"You must hurry," she said. "Igor shall escort you through. Apologies there's no time to introduce you!"

The wizard flashed him a silver-toothed smile, gripped Severus by the upper arm and marched him through the gates.

Though he'd visited a few weeks prior, Severus paused to admire the lodge. Atop the slope stood a grand Georgian house topped with a bell tower. Its face was decorated with blooming wisteria, and at its centre had white columns garnished with sphinxes flanking the sparkling stained-glass doors.

Igor turned back towards Narcissa without a word.

"Thank you," Severus called over his shoulder.

Severus withdrew his wand, from which silver sparks shot out the tip in anticipation. He took a deep, steadying breath and channelled a feeling of weightlessness from his ankles through to his toes. With a flick of his wrist, he at once shot up the hill twice as fast as he could sprint. His stomach lurched pleasantly and, for a brief moment, he enjoyed the thrill of flying, the chill air throwing his hair and robes out behind him.

He slowed to a gentle landing as an unfazed house-elf opened one of the glass front doors and bowed deeply to the ground.

Severus strode into a stately entrance hall and followed the sound of someone speaking, his footsteps echoing on the white marble.

He stopped at an open door.

Thankfully, the rows of chairs had their backs to him, and he slipped in unnoticed.

"… adding to our grief as the second martyr to fall by the callous hand of our government this month. The undignified, callous manner of his passing makes a mockery of Roger's tireless support, his unending dedication to…"

State-sanctioned vigilantism, more like.

Lucius's white-blond head shone in the morning light filtering through vast sash windows, but Severus didn't recognise any of the other mourners from behind.

A solemn wizard in a black cape lit some incense with his wand whilst an elderly woman began to sob great hacking gasps of breath, so loud that Severus couldn't listen to the eulogy even if he wanted to.

He stared at the back of the wizard's head in front of him, and thought. Lucius was well aware of Severus's dear ambition to join the Dark Order. You may find it fortuitous to attend. That must mean his first Sponsor was here amongst the few dozen mourners. Perhaps his second Sponsor, too.

The haunting of the Dark Lord's followers wasn't off-putting. It enraged him.

Having regained her earlier discomposure, a witch announced, "My son may have passed, but I am—and always will be—a mother. I am keenly aware of the youngsters in today's society who have parents unsupportive of their children's hopes, fears and ambitions. Children filled with dread at ever saying the wrong thing.

"My son must have been treated, at times, as some kind of outcast child. Yet, he was the joy of our family, the pride and the hope of our lives. I am proud of him. And so is his father."

A trembling man standing next to her nodded.

"As you can tell from my being here today, this has not been an easy walk, but Roger's way was paved with his approval by his parents, the support from you all who have gathered here in grief, and the love and the prayers of friends.

"When I sat down to write this, I realised that even though I was doing something that very few people had done before, I was still very much in the minority. A mother, supporting his son, in opposition to the Ministry and terrorism in all its forms. I believe that in the many facets of life, those who follow the crowd and don't stand up for magic are responsible for a majority of the world's violence. I thought about that for a long time, and I would feel that I had failed myself and my son by not doing more to stop it.

"And so: I will be your mother. We will provide shelter."

She clutched at the man's wrist and he wiped his eyes with a handkerchief.

"It matters not who your parents are, or where you come from, you are all precious." The couple were aged enough to be everyone's parents. "This organisation is one family. And we must unite. Shoulder to shoulder. Now, more than ever before, we must find solace and the bosom of familial comfort in each other's homes and hearts."

She adjusted a fox fur stole around her neck and recited a poem. After the first few words, Severus stopped listening until the first wizard spoke again.

"And now, we shall stand, for a minute of reflective silence in remembrance of all of our fallen brothers- and sisters-in-arms."

Though they were hunted, Severus was undaunted. One either joined the winning side, or lost.

Once the minute was up, Severus copied everyone in raising their wands to the ceiling, and silently shot bronze and purple sparks into the air.

The crowd milled through the side doors into a great pillared ballroom, resplendent with golden curtains and a balcony of mournful violinists. Golden friezes glittered below the architrave, and the ceiling panels were edged in delicate silver. The bronze chandeliers made the effect of the whole room nearly palatial. Even the floor was of pale green marble. The walls were of the same hue, and upon a pair of plinths by the doors stood urns, which lent a note of peculiar pathos to the scene.

As Severus entered, he took in the whole effect in an instant. He felt as though he had stepped into a different world. A door from the ballroom opened upon a terrace and he swept past the glass doors. In the centre of the terrace was a marble fountain which was alive with glistening, rainbow-tinted fish.

The old woman and her husband were in his line of sight and he veered away; he wasn't certain he'd ever met Roger Shaddick.

Severus grabbed a tiny triangular sandwich from a house-elf's tray, and craned his neck, longing for a cup of tea. Stuffing the cheese-and-pickle sandwich into his mouth, he passed an old warlock ranting about tonight's full moon, and approached Lucius, who was muttering to a man with unkempt dark hair and a beard.

"Here he is," Lucius said with a tight smile. "Severus is starting his final year at Hogwarts next week."

Severus swallowed the remnants of his mouthful as Lucius turned to him and said, "I would like you to meet Rabastan Lestrange."

They shook hands, and Severus picked up a tea from a passing tray.

Rabastan uncorked a hip flask and tipped a drop into everyone's teacups. A spit of light flashed through the air. The flame was wild and unruly, but it had a strange beauty, like the first deep red rose of summer, and it vanished as quickly as it came.

"I'll fetch my brother," Rabastan said, and disappeared.

"A man of few words," Lucius muttered. "Quite refreshing from the usual small talk. You and he are the only single wizards in the room not wanting to know if Priscilla's engaged to that odious boy."

Severus nodded and sipped his tea, which scalded his tongue, the fiery liquid creeping down his oesophagus, burning as it went. He cleared his throat.

Lucius's sister moved in their circles, but her blonde pin-curls and white furs were nowhere in sight.

"She didn't know Shaddick, then?" Severus asked.

Lucius smirked. "Prissy's gone abroad on ... business."

Severus raised his teacup. "To her health."

Lucius drank to that, then surveyed the ballroom with his cool, grey eyes. "Have you created any new little charms since we last spoke?"

Severus shook his head. Lucius loved new magic almost as much as Severus did. "I find I'm more inspired when at the castle."

A dark-haired man, with a trimmed beard and serious face, wended his way through the crowd towards them holding a plate of buffet food.

"Ah. Rodolphus," Lucius said.

"My word," the man said, holding out a hand before Severus had a chance to offer his own. "On the whisky already, I see, Severus." He nodded to Severus's smoking teacup, then appraised him.

"Roger's passing was a great loss," Severus said. Then he bit his tongue. Funeral conversations were not one of his skills.

"Mmm," Rodolphus grunted around his sandwich. The glass eyes of the stole around his neck glinted. "So young." He swallowed and continued, "Almost twenty-three. Is it true you can fly without a broom?"

"It is."

Nobody spoke whilst Rodolphus devoured his second sandwich. Lucius politely looked out at the crowd.

Rodolphus gestured around the ballroom. "And you're sure this is what you want?"

"More than anything."

"You're clearly gifted. But I don't know of your family. They won't hold you back? Or be a... liability?"

Severus gestured to the room with his teacup. "This will be my new family."

Rodolphus's gaze flitted to Lucius, who nodded.

Then Rodolphus looked him up and down again. "Well, well, well. I hope for the sake of your future, you can secure yourself a second Sponsor," he said, before spinning on his heel and leaving.

Severus closed his mouth.

"Is he—?"

"Your first Sponsor. May I be the first to offer you my congratulations?" Lucius said smoothly, the corners of his mouth curving up into a satisfied smile.

It was as though his insides were filled with air. He could fly!

Lucius's smile was infectious, the last of Severus's apprehensions vanishing with it. He returned it, and felt the grin, freshly forged and full of promise, all the way down to his knees. "Something good has come out of a sombre occasion. I owe you my gratitude for arranging this."

"Quid pro quo."

Before Severus could respond, Rabastan strode up and clapped Severus on the back. "It shan't be long, now, until we welcome you into the fold. I hope you're a better duellist than my brother's late protégé," he said, nodding to the room they'd come from.

Severus's stomach dropped like a stone and he drank deeply from his teacup. The firewhisky made his eyes water, so schooling his face into a neutral expression was easy. Was it normal to replace a dead man? Should he be concerned?

Some strangers engaged Lucius in conversation about his wayward brother Julius and his socialite widow girlfriend Celeste de Witte, and Severus turned his thoughts to more productive lines of enquiry, such as how he'd get his second Sponsor and be admitted to the ranks of the organisation.

Not everyone was like Lucius. Not everyone believed in Severus's potential.

Amongst the motley crew present at the wake were an ancient warlock, a pale sickly man skulking in the corner whom Severus suspected was a vampire, and a Hufflepuff witch who was a few years above him in school.

Handsome and ugly, young and wizened, human and beast, all were welcome here to better this land, to advance the boundaries of magical research, to win a war. His second Sponsor might be in this crowd. Unwilling to push his luck, Severus remained mute at Lucius's side, and resolved to at least wait until Hogwarts to write to him about this.

Not least because he'd used his last roll of parchment for his homework, and couldn't afford an owl.

I was wondering in my time travel fic who should receive an O.M. for helping defeat Voldemort, and reviewed canon for the existing recipients. Here are my findings:

  • Damocles Belby: for inventing the Wolfsbane Potion
  • Arcturus Black: First Class, for ‘services to the Ministry’, according to Sirius he gave them a ‘load of gold’, according to Pottermore ‘loaning the Ministry a large amount of gold’
  • Albus Dumbledore: First Class for his defeat of Grindelwald
  • Cornelius Fudge: First Class (according to Pottermore this was ‘self-awarded’)
  • Gilderoy Lockhart: Third Class
  • Peter Pettigrew: First Class
  • Newt Scamander: Second Class (Fantastic Beasts Comic Relief textbook)
  • (Severus Snape is offered a Second or First Class Order of Merlin for helping save the trio and aiding in Sirius’s arrest)

Recipients According to Secondary Canon

  • Remus Lupin: First Class (Pottermore canon)
  • Minerva McGonagall: First Class (Short Stories From Hogwarts canon)

Fear not, I’m not gonna rehash my monthly reviews. I joined AO3 on 3rd January 2020. So to this day, I’ve got 2 years to look back on.

Here is a pie chart of my Harry Potter words! YAY SPREADSHEETS:

I wanted to do 20k translation and ended up doing 85k. A lot of these words aren’t on AO3 and I plan to post the bulk of them in 2022.

Onto podfic stats!:

I recorded 34 hours last year and 36 hours this year (6 more than my goal). What surprises me most is the similarity of my pie charts in comparison with 2020. My tastes haven’t changed at all. I am significantly faster (unsurprisingly, since I’m less of a n00b and refined my editing and recording) but I had lots of dry spells.

Last year I podficced 91% Snarry, and this year a significant Drarry chunk was my 90k fic.:

Miscellaneous 2021 stats

- I broke 0 Kindles! :sunglasses:

- I haven’t totally mastered Scrivener, but I am getting the hang of it, and I love it. I haven’t looked back.

- I still felt as though I was jumping from fest to fest, without time to read any fanworks. However, I was glad I hadn’t read Avioleta’s AUctoberfest she wrote based on my prompt til I’d finished my Swap fic. We’d trod over the same paths. And it meant I couldn’t subconsciously copy elements of her work.

- Last year I thought it amazing I got 1000 kudos on my Snarry soulmate fic, and now it’s doubly amazing to see 1.5k!!! Thanks all! And 366 on Endgame, after less than a fortnight - blimey people!! I truly appreciate your support.

- I am up to 12 kudos on Of Love Notes and Bottle Caps! YAAAS. MUST finish that in 2022 LOL. For the 15th year, it is still on my to do list. Bad Joc.

- I beta read about 5 things, not good.

- I read Self-Editing for Fiction Writers for the 3rd time.

- I listened to EVERY SINGLE EPISODE of KM Weiland’s Helping Writers Become Authors podcast. This is gold. Everyone should listen to her. I have learnt so much and I’m sure I’m a better writer thanks to her. It’s been weekly for 10 years! All her posts are on her blog, too.

- Decided not to be in contact with ~30 Drarry fandom people after some nasty group bullying

- A goal from last year was to have a sound dampening podfic frame, and my husband built one. I am no longer recording under a blanket, or crouched in a den.

- Editing podfics takes about 1/3 of the time now I use punch and roll. I’m surprised more podficcers don’t do this, as it’s industry standard amongst audiobook narrators. I utilise a number of macros and believe my quality is much higher nowadays

- I aimed to co-write a Snarry, and we succeeded

- I took part in Voiceteam, Voiceteam Mystery Box, Snarry AUctoberfest, Secret Snarry Swap, Snarry-a-Thon, and HP Podfic Mini Fest.

- I added 200 authors with blanket podfic permission statements to the FPSlist. This will turn their names green on the Chrome extension. I encourage all creators to consider writing a statement -  a ”yes”, ”ask first”, or a ”no”.

My goals for 2022

- I have signed up for another 200k Get Your Words Out challenge

- Translate at least 1 story. Thanks to Bailou I have a shortlist, in order of preference

- Spend most of my year working on my time travel Snarry

- Write at least 1 podfic guide

- Record 20 podfic hours (much less than this year)

- Sign up for ZERO fests. Except perhaps Voiceteam and Voiceteam Mystery Box. How else is this time travel ever gonna get done??

- I am only going to podfic authors with blanket permission statements going forwards

It’s been ages since I did one of these. Since I hit my GYWO goal I’ve been less motivated to write up my progress. So here are 3 months’ worth of progress!

Audio:

  • I recorded 3 more chapters of Unrestrained. The tension is ratcheting up
  • I podficced Final Examination by asecretchord. Thanks to asecretchord for having a podfic permission statement on AO3!
  • I recorded Two Men In a Bar by Nabielka, it’s a fic I’ve recced many times on Discord. Tom Riddle/Edmund Pevensie. I am dying for more of this ship. As a general rule, I dislike crossovers, because I’m unfamiliar with so many other canon universes, and love the HP world and characters so much. BUT I do love Narnia, I remember my dad reading them to me as a child. And Edmund is deliciously flawed. The fact that he’s a Muggle who can resist the Imperius Curse is so damn exciting.

Words:

  • 600 words for an alternative ending for Noughts and Crosses. I’m working on this for Voiceteam Mystery Box, a podfic scavenger hunt challenge.
  • 1.5k for In the Web. Still working on the themes.
  • I finished in time for AUctoberfest! So here I am, claiming my translation of All You Need Is Love by the great TreggiDi. Loved writing this. Big thanks to avioleta and space_wingding for the Americanpicking assistance. It’s the 60s, Snape is a Vietnam War veteran, Harry is a peace-loving hippie.
  • AND I finally finished my Secret Snarry Swap fic. This is my first time writing for Swap. It took ages. Necessitated a painstaking HBP and DH re-read. Endgame. 49,362 words in this 3-month period, and MANY hours spent agonising over word choices, cutting naff lines. I finished editing it several days after it posted… eek. Probably only made it about 2% better though haha. I’ve been blown away by its reception!

My year-long Get Your Words Out goal was 200k, and I wrote 286,987! NOICE!

I’ve signed up again for next year, but will be off to another slow January because I’m in the thick of Voiceteam.

The wind has gone out my sails for my Choose Your Own Adventure, because space_wingding was beta reading it and seems to have disappeared from the planet. If you’re reading this: I hope you’re well, and hope to see you again in my inbox. Whether it’s soon or years from now.

I’ve encountered the view that the books are not appropriately diverse and, being HP book-mad, I sought to examine the facts.

I began by looking at the 40 named students in Harry’s year:

  • 2 Indians (Patil twins) which is 5% of the year group
  • 2 Black students (Dean and Blaise) - 5%
  • 1 Irish (Seamus) - 2.5%

Then I stopped being lazy and did a ‘census’ of the characters. To answer the question ”Is HP series diverse?”, we need to look at the ethnic diversity of the UK and compare it to the cast within the books.

The diversity of the Fantastic Beasts films and the decision to recast Lavender as a white actress are beyond the scope of this post.

To set the historical context, the Philosopher's Stone was published in 1997, and is set in 1991-2, and the idea for HP first came in 1990. Therefore, I’ll focus on the 1991 census, which conveniently is the first one to do a proper ethnicity survey.

Methods for the Great Britain census

  • Data taken from 1991 census data freely available from: http://casweb.ukdataservice.ac.uk/index.htm
  • All regions within England, Wales, and Scotland were selected. Northern Ireland data were unavailable.
  • Percentage of the following categories were calculated as a percentage of the ”Total Persons” column: White, Black Caribbean, Black African, Black Other, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese, Asian, Other, Persons Born in Ireland.
  • White and Persons Born in Ireland were combined to one percentage value.
  • Black Caribbean, Black African and Black Other were combined to one percentage value.

Methods for the book census

Canon definition

  • Mentioned by name in the first 7 HP books

Inclusion criteria:

  • Humans or part-humans alive within 20 years of the events of book 1
  • Mentioned over 12 times in canon

Exclusion criteria:

  • Animals
  • Ghosts
  • Centaurs
  • Nagini (the revelation that she’s a woman is FB canon not HP canon)
  • Portraits unless alive within 20 years of the events of book 1

Ethnicity assumptions:

  • All characters are white unless otherwise specified
  • Ethnic assumptions were sometimes based on names alone. I realise this isn’t ideal

I feel compelled to write something to accompany this table since you should never present a results section without words. But the table speaks for itself. I realise China is in Asia but this is how the census asked the question.

Results of the book census

162 characters were included in the census.

Of which are black: Angelina Johnson, Blaise Zabini, Dean Thomas, Kingsley Shacklebolt

Cho Chang is assumed to be Chinese. The words ”Chinese” or ”China” (the country) do not appear in canon

The Patil twins are assumed to be Indian. The words ”Indian” or ”India” do not appear in canon

Hassan Mostafa is Egyptian (I have listed him as ”other”)

This results in the following table:

Discussion

  • The percentage of white characters and the British population at the time is comparable.
  • Black characters are slightly overrepresented and it would be nice to have at least one Bangladeshi or Pakistani. There don’t seem to be Muslim characters unless we make a lot of assumptions about Hassan.
  • The book cast as a whole is appropriately diverse for the time and country it is set.
  • However, it would be nice to have more diversity amongst the main characters as opposed to the background characters.

I hope you found this blog post interesting and informative, and would be glad to hear your thoughts.

A drabble for the prompt of 'registration'. I'd love to see this forced marriage AU, preferably 80k with lots of pining XD

Annual Registration began at dawn, yet Potter stood waiting at the lifts beside the sign: ‘MANDATORY CENSUS’.

“Hi!”

Severus stuck his nose in the Daily Prophet.

They piled into a lift and Potter beamed. “What floor do you want?”

Severus did not answer, then exited at record speed. He had completed half his paperwork before Potter reached the Godric’s Hollow table.

The Ministry witch tutted. “Still unmarried?”

Severus curled his lip.

“Have your Exile Forms ready for the next registration,” she said.

Potter caught up with Severus in the Atrium.

“They’re exiling me next year, too,” he said, eyes sparkling.

And a quick EWE hurt/comfort:

Severus tossed his novel under the bed and played dead as familiar footsteps neared the ward.

The visitors’ chair creaked and Potter read Potions Quarterly aloud.

Potter held his hand—evidence Potter truly considered him unconscious. The things Potter sometimes whispered to him made Severus doubt this.

Later, Potter shuffled away.

“Still no change?”

Severus couldn’t hear the reply, but it wasn’t the Healer rubbing Numbing Salve into his neck.

“I hope you wake soon. I’ve got loads to tell you.”

Potter didn’t—he’d heard every word. And it astonished him when the apparently spell-damaged boy skimmed his lips over Severus’s knuckles.

And another h/c!:

“I like you,” Harry gasped, clutching his ribs. “Romantically.”

“Hush, now. I’m concentrating.”

Severus poured a drachm of thick golden potion down Harry’s throat, blotted out Harry’s addled confessions, then wrote protective runes in the air with his wand.

Severus watched him sucking in painful breaths. “You should be improving.”

“I’ll be fine—I’m with you.”

“You’re not fine. You’re cursed.”

He measured out Painkilling Potion, and Harry clasped his wrist.

“Sorry. I thought you felt the same way.”

Finite Incantatem!

Harry scowled and said, “I’m not Confunded—” he cringed in pain “—don’t leave.”

“I never will,” Severus murmured. “Don’t fret.”

—I’m going to be writing some posts on writing to help me consolidate what I’ve learnt. If anyone finds this useful, then power to you, and comment below! But if no one comments then don’t feel sorry for me.—

The main character is the point of view character, and are in all the scenes we read. They are often, but not always, the protagonist.

The protagonist ends the conflict at the climactic moment, answering the question posed at the inciting event. For example, this question may be ”What shifty stuff is Draco Malfoy up to?” Answer: ”trying to kill Dumbledore”. The protagonist is opposed by an antagonist or antagonistic force (such as bad weather). The protagonist is often, but not always, heroic. After all, ”We are all the heroes of our own lives.” In the same vein, the antagonist is not always a baddie. They’re just someone with opposing goals to the protagonist. In coming-of-age stories, the antagonist might be your mum, who opposes your goals, but isn’t a terrible person.

Sometimes stories are told through witnesses: a main character or a narrator. This technique can be useful for enhancing the mysteriousness or greatness of the protagonist. Sherlock’s genius would not be nearly so interesting told from his POV, nor would To Kill a Mockingbird be as good from an adult’s viewpoint. Shawshank Redemption wouldn’t have been as good if we knew how the white dude escaped, watched him make his tunnel with a toothpick or whatever, and we didn’t see Morgan Freeman get freed at the end.

Stories I can think of where POV character is not the protagonist:

  • A ?Dramione fic I read ages ago, told through the eyes of the passive narrator Crookshanks.
  • The books about Sherlock Holmes. The narrator is Dr Watson, who tells the story of the protagonist Sherlock. The stories are more interesting when we don't have the workings of Sherlock's brilliant mind fingertips. In the BBC’s Sherlock, Dr Watson is also a main character not just a narrator, since he goes along on the adventures, helps out, and is impacted by the plot.
  • Shawshank Redemption. Morgan Freeman is the main character, the white guy is the protagonist. He is the one that drives the plot forwards and ends the conflict by escaping jail.
  • Wuthering Heights is about Cathy and Heathcliff told from the point of view of servants. They are narrators rather than main characters.
  • Fight Club. An unnamed narrator working in an office tells the story of Tyler Durden/Brad Pitt, and Tyler is the protagonist because he drives the story forwards.
  • Peter Pan is from Wendy’s POV, and Peter is the protagonist. He drives the story forward and opposes the antagonist, Captain Hook.
  • To Kill a Mockingbird is told through the eyes of young Scout. The protagonist is her father, Atticus Finch, who is a lawyer. He ends the conflict when he tries and fails to successfully defend Tom Robinson who’s wrongly accused of rape.
  • Far From the Madding Crowd. Gabriel Oak (<3) is the main character but Bathsheba is the protagonist. She makes decisions, gets things done.
  • Arguably Mary Poppins isn't the protagonist of Mary Poppins because she just shows up and does her job. Mr Banks is the one who calls the shots, and no longer needs her when he learns he should appreciate his kids and loosen up.
  • Moby Dick. It's narrated by Ishmael but he doesn't really do much. The protagonist is Captain Ahab.
